“The Lesson”

My Rating: 3.72/4 (aka Worth your time)

One line summary: A promising writer becomes a tutor on the estate of a legendary author.

The Deets: This isn’t a great film, but it’s damn entertaining. It has a wonderful air about it, one of mystery, but also a sinister tone, and you know the whole time that there is more lurking beneath the surface; the truth behind the egos and the strained relationships that are masked over by hollow family rituals and proper dress. The acting is right on point, if just a tad over-intellectualized to poke fun at the aristocracy and self-importance of Richard E. Grant’s novelistic character. It unfolds almost as a play on stage, and the ending is actually quite satisfying, once all of the secrets have been revealed.

Perfect for: If you’re in the mood for a dramatic thriller that doesn’t try to be too much more than its entertaining self.

Where to watch: You gotta rent it on streaming, and you won’t be disappointed (but if you are, don’t blame me).

Food pairing: Cheese, crackers, a salad lightly dressed, and maybe some berries – to stay in the mood of the English countryside.
