My Rating: 3.94 (aka Must see)
One line summary: As her religious marriage approaches, Anat’s estranged psychiatrist father comes to Israel to intervene, and unexpected entanglements ensue.
The Deets: I don’t love this movie just because the director (Avi Nesher) and I share a first name. And if you’ve seen his other work (especially “Past Life” – also starring the excellent Joy Rieger) you already know why he vibes with me. Such richness of story here with no special effects (but it does get into our head) — this is a film layered with the narrative of family, relationships, forgiveness, how we try to (erroneously) assert control (over ourselves and others), and the ultimate messiness of life. And when the last lines are spoken, you want the next chapter to begin right away, to hang with the characters who have been woven, each going through challenges and moving ahead while accepting their flaws. I can’t wait for Nesher’s next film, which will be released this year.
Perfect for: Anyone who was into “Past Life” (also a Must See), and if you’re in the mood for a beautiful family drama.
Where to watch: You need rent it, and you obviously should. I might need to schedule a re-watch soon.
Food pairing: Similar to my recommendation for “Footnote,” I think you need to go Israeli food, preferably with a shawarma and some hummus.
