My Rating: 3.62/4 (aka Worth your time)
One line summary: Two identical men meet by chance and a Hitchcockian mystery unfolds.
The Deets: I wouldn’t really call this a thriller, but it does feel like a direct descendant of the great Hitchcock, who knew how to pace a film so perfectly and keep you on edge. This one keeps you intrigued, though the stakes are not always clear. Matthew Rhys in the dual role is excellent, and he carries the story along with subtlety and depth. In the end you realize the movie is less about the mystery that’s unfolding and more about identity and becoming someone new from within ourselves, and aligned to the 1952 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. I assume the Brits understand the moment better than this American, far removed from a monarchy. Either way, this is a fine watch that you won’t regret.
Perfect for: When you’re in the mood for a warmly textured and well-paced mystery with full British flair. Just don’t expect any rambunctious action because the tone is even and tame.
Where to watch: As of now it’s included with Amazon Prime, which should entice you even more.
Food pairing: Toast with butter and jam, tea optional; and yes, even in the evening.
