My Rating: 3.82/4 (aka Definitely worth it)
One line summary: The true and mysterious story of an art thief couple.
The Deets: Even though we watch a lot of documentaries, this is only the second one that I’ve reviewed (Tony Hawk was the first), and it’s incredibly well done. It plays almost like a thriller, as the details of what the filmmakers discover hang in mystery until the very end (and still we are left with questions!). The main story centers around a stolen Willem de Kooning painting that is randomly found in a home in New Mexico. But the story behind the story is utterly fascinating, totally unexpected, quite sinister, and wonderfully told, as they weave together fictional reenactments with numerous interviews who knew the now-deceased subjects. A reminder that we never really know people behind their closed doors.
Perfect for: If you enjoy documentaries generally, and especially if you’re into art.
Where to watch: Included with Amazon Prime, get it while it’s hot!
Food pairing: Something fizzy to drink and something quirky to snack, to match the mood.
