My Rating: 3.86/4 (aka Highly enjoyable)
One line summary: A grandmother tends to her garden, family, and friends, amidst the changing seasons of life.
The Deets: I guess we’re on a French kick lately! I have long been a fan of director Francois Ozon, dating back 25 years to his excellent “Under the Sand.” He is a master at keeping you off balance, blending the real with the surreal (see his stunning “Swimming Pool” for a perfect example), and that’s partly why I struggled to write the one-sentence blurb about this film. Because it bends across genres; it might be a beautiful dramatic movie about family challenges, or the slow descent into the “winter” of life, or it might be a murder mystery. Or maybe it’s all of the above. And it doesn’t really matter – it’s beautiful and often sumptuous to watch, all the way to the very last, significant frame.
Perfect for: Anyone who’s already a fan of Ozon, and if you enjoy movies set in the French countryside, picking mushrooms.
Where to watch: You can rent it on your favorite streaming service, and you should – a perfect Sunday evening watch.
Food pairing: Definitely a quiche to match the mood; my favorite is Lorraine.
