My Rating: 3.73/4 (aka Funny and Worth it)
One line summary: A writer descends into crisis when she overhears her husband say that he doesn’t like her novel.
The Deets: I am a big fan of Nicole Holofcener, the writer/director of this funny and astutely observed film, as well as a bunch of others that are well worth your time: “Walking and Talking,” “Friends with Money,” “Please Give,” “Lovely and Amazing,” and “Enough Said.” Her movies are about regular people living mostly regular lives and trying to make the best of it. Her characters wrestle with their neuroses, their marriages, their families, and – often – with morality, questioning the “right” thing to do in the life moments that arise and cause us to struggle. Or, as we learn, maybe it’s us who cause the struggle? This is a warm, humorous (sometimes laugh-out-loud), and witty look at life, encompassing the nuances of all the relationships we inhabit: as spouse, parent, child, friend, client, and even patient. It’s definitely worth a watch.
Perfect for: If you’re a New Yorker (great NYC texture), a writer or a spouse (or both); cherry on top if you’re already into Holofcener’s movies. And when you want a good laugh.
Where to watch: Still in theaters (as of July), but you can rent it on your favorite streaming site.
Food pairing: Feels like this one deserves a big bowl of pasta.
