“When Harry Met Sally”

My Rating: 3.96/4 (aka Top 3 all-time romcom)

One line summary: Men and women can’t be friends.

The Deets: I watched this one for the 735253636th time last week on our flight home from Tokyo, and I was reminded just how delightful it is, especially on a rewatch. I generally say that “Annie Hall” from 1977 is the original “modern” romcom, but this 1989 gem from an Oscar-nominated script by Nora Ephron is pretty much perfect – and it’s tight (92 minutes!), hilarious, and wise. Rob Reiner’s direction is genius, especially the couple interview interludes, and Meg Ryan + Billy Crystal are made for each other. You will laugh nonstop, you will laugh at the corded phones, and you will be quoting the lines back to yourself kind of forever. They definitely don’t make them like this anymore.

Perfect for: If you haven’t seen this absolute perfection of a romcom because you didn’t come of age in the 80s or 90s, and if you haven’t seen it in a few years – you must, because this is the very definition of a rewatchable movie.

Where to watch: Surprisingly, not so easy to stream – you can buy it on Prime for the discounted low price of $4.99 and it’s totally worth it.

Food pairing: Pastrami on rye.
