My Rating: 3.79/4 (aka Probably worth your time if you’re in the mood)
One line summary: Three (very) loosely connected vignettes about family.
The Deets: What I love about Jim Jarmusch is that he is a true independent filmmaker and he’s able to make great movies that attract great actors; his style is distinct, his films feel like poems or watercolors, and his scripts rely on raw performances, which often deliver. This triptych has some amazing actors and its seeming smallness expands as it progresses; the third of three is a beautiful narrative of love and simplicity. It’s not an amazing movie, and yet it will stick with me and that is worth a damn. Almost kind of reminds me of the feelings that persist after reading a short story by Raymond Carver – there is a plainness to the work that is true and laid bare, and you feel a comfort in that truth. That which is said out loud and what is not.
Perfect for: If you’re already a Jarmusch fan, then this film will be candy: or if you’re in the mood for awkward and authentic and beautiful family dynamics.
Where to watch: You can rent it on Amazon Prime or Apple TV, and you will leave feeling hugged.
Food pairing: Mini scones and coffee (that you can toast with).
